Birmingham International

Birmingham International Station is located in Solihull, east of the city of Birmingham in England. The station is managed by Virgin Trains and is also served by CrossCountry and London Midland. It has five platforms, consisting of two islands and one side platform numbered 1-5 from south to north.

Station
This station is very big, and can be a little daunting if the disabled traveller is on their own. First-time users should find the main concourse and the platforms are well signposted, and have adequate lifts for getting onto the correct platform.

Information offices are located adjacent to platforms 2, 3, 4 and 5. Passenger assistance staff are able to give directions and help with ramps.

Access
The ramps onto some of the trains such as Virgin, Cross Country and First Great Western are quite steep, and would be an effort to push a manual wheelchair upwards onto the train. The staff are willing to help push, so ask for assistance.

Accessible Toilets
Accessible toilets are on the ground floor (inner concourse). They are kept to a clean standard, with a good size for turning. They include soap dispenser, towels, warm air dryer and mirror. The toilet did not require a key.

Other facilities
There are a wide variety of shops, including coffee bars, food outlets and general stores, which was more like a small high-street, and was very busy.

Most taxis seem to only carry a two-part ramp more suitable for manual wheelchairs, and unsuitable for powered chairs such as the Quickie Samba 2. Drivers are generally helpful but you can expect a wait of at least 20 minutes for a cab.

Ramped access Black Cabs, which do not clamp the chair in, are available. They can be a little rough around corners, and more suitable for those who are able to hang onto the internal handle bars of the cab for stability.

Airport:
Birmingham Airport a ten minute walk from Birmingham International Station and offers both domestic flights within the UK, and internationally. It is the seventh busiest airport in the UK.
